GIRLBOSS RULES

You don’t just get to be a girl boss (or a boy boss for that matter).  It takes hard work and a lot of tenacity to lead, dream, manage, confront, and build.  So, what are some rules that I’ve discovered after working in a variety of industries and with lots of different kinds of leaders?

DISTRACTION, YOU KNOW MY NAME

Distraction knows me.  It knows how I work, where I work, and just when to show up.  Sometimes it looks like a co-worker who needs “just a second.”  Sometimes it looks like Instagram when I just “need a break.”  Sometimes it is a long lunch when a short lunch should do.  It is never working for me, but it feels like my best buddy.  So, how do I deal with distraction?

WINTER DENIAL: GO PUT ON A COAT

Louisiana people have a strange way of coping with cold weather.  We complain about it incessantly, but we do not wear warmer clothing.  Winter denial is a quirky cultural habit of the south.  It makes us colder than we have to be for longer, but its generally harmless.  There are other kinds of denial that aren’t quite as quirky and cute.

BOOKS CATEGORIZED AS BEVERAGES

How you read and whether you will be successful at using reading to get better in every area will in large part depend on your awareness of what kind of book you are reading and how much of any category you can consume without overload.  Here are my classifications of books in a rather liquid motif.  Bottoms up!

SECONDS COUNT

The second day of January, the second day of work, the second date, the second week of school, the second year of law school, the second interview, the second visit, the second tells us a lot about things.  It reveals new issues, uncovers hidden habits, and shows what is serious and who is all talk.  Seconds make or break futures, relationships, and even destiny’s.  What will the second day, second month, second quarter of this year say about you?  The great thing is that you control the message completely.  Make a determination that the second will be better than the first.  Work out stronger today.  Eat healthier today.  Practice harder today.  Truth is, every second counts.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Here is a secret: all the new beginnings in the world won’t help if you don’t have any new wisdom or new tools as well. Books, podcasts, great conversations with people who are farther down the path can all give the tools you will need to make the most of the new year, new opportunity, new relationship or even new faith journey. So, this year, I’m sharing some of the books that I go to when reworking my world.

THE GIFT OF PRESENCE

In this social media age, we are changing the way we experience things.  We often miss the moment in our attempt to preserve it. This isn’t a new thought, but it’s one I think we quickly dismiss as we cultivate our Insta-story. Why should we be fighting to live more in the moment?

BLESSINGS IN MY BAGGAGE

Like everyone, life has taken me some places I’m proud of and some that I wince when I recall the trip.  My memory brings those less fond memories up more often and impromptu.  While I intentionally rehearse the great days, my mind likes to throw the bad ones in my face at the worst possible time (2am - anyone?). We can push those memories down, and sometimes that’s the right thing to do, but not always.

COOKING - IT'S FOR EVERYONE

I am not my grandmother.  She is a cook.  She can throw down.  She makes people swoon.  I, on the other hand, need Pinterest. I don’t cook like her, but I assemble the ingredients and 95% of the time it is edible and 70% of the time it is delicious!  Don’t let someone else’s kitchen swag intimidate you from cooking. And Christianity isn’t for experts either, just people who are hungry, willing to make mistakes, and unafraid to ask for help.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WANT TO GIVE UP

Someday you will want to give up.  Maybe that day is today.  Maybe that day is tomorrow.  Maybe it was last month.  The day comes.  And it’s great to do what you can to avoid and prevent that day.  But what about when it is here staring us in the face?  You can call it a personality quirk or whatever, but I feel this way more than what I think is normal. Here are some things I have learned to do when I want to give up.
